The Machame Route, often called the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular and scenic trails up Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day trek offers breathtaking landscapes, diverse vegetation zones, and the best acclimatization profile, giving you a higher chance of reaching the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Camp – Budget Camping on Mountain Kilimanjaro

Your adventure begins with a transfer from Moshi/Arusha to the Machame Gate (1,800m). After completing registration, start your trek through lush rainforest filled with wildlife and birdlife. Hike for about 5–6 hours to Machame Camp (3,000m) for dinner and overnight camping.

Day 2: Shira Camp – Budget Camping on Mountain Kilimanjaro

Leave the rainforest behind and climb into the moorland zone. The trail opens up to breathtaking views of Shira Plateau. Today's trek takes about 5–6 hours, ending at Shira Camp (3,840m) where you will camp overnight.

Day 3: Lava Tower – Budget Camping on Mountain Kilimanjaro

A challenging but rewarding day as you ascend to the famous Lava Tower (4,630m). This hike aids acclimatization, and though it can be tough, the gradual climb is worth it. Descend slightly to Barranco Valley, camping near the Lava Tower.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Budget Camping on Mountain Kilimanjaro

Today you'll face the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb offering stunning views. Continue through alpine desert landscapes to Karanga Camp (3,995m). Overnight at camp.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Budget Camping on Mountain Kilimanjaro

A short but steep trek brings you to Barafu Camp (4,673m), the base camp for the summit attempt. Prepare for your midnight climb. Dinner and early rest at the camp.

Day 6: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak – Budget Camping on Mountain Kilimanjaro

Begin your summit push around midnight, trekking with headlamps up steep scree slopes to Stella Point (5,756m). After a short rest, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa! Celebrate your achievement before descending back to Barafu Camp and then down to Mweka Camp for the night.

Day 7: Mweka Gate – End of Tour

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m) where you'll receive your summit certificate. Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi/Arusha. No accommodation provided this day.
